Strengthen student supports

Why
it matters

Our students’ ability to engage in school and succeed academically is influenced by many out of school realities in their lives. These include their social and emotional needs, physical and mental health, and experiences of poverty, homelessness, and trauma. When our schools and community organizations provide the non-academic, wraparound support our students and their families need, students are able to feel safe in school, succeed academically, heal and become resilient.

How
we do it

  • Create a coordinated wraparound student support system for Olympia School District by adopting the Washington Integrated Student Support Protocol (WISSP).

  • Invest in early learning programs for Pre-K students, as well as expanded learning opportunities before school, after school, and during the summer that support what students learn during the school year.

  • Increase personalized pathways to graduation and opportunities to earn college credit or begin a CTE apprenticeship in high school.

  • Create multiple opportunities for high school graduation, implementing recently passed state legislation (HB 1599).

  • Apply Social Emotional Learning Benchmarks and Standards to support student mental health, ensure schools are trauma-informed environments.

  • Provide training for educators to use these standards as part of their existing instruction and pedagogy.

  • Support students who are experiencing poverty and homelessness through an increased partnership with Olympia School District’s McKinney-Vento homeless liaison, the City of Olympia, and local support agencies.

What
it looks like

Students and families share their needs and are met with compassionate, integrated wraparound services to meet them where they are at in their lives and support their success in school.

Educators collaborate to identify school supports and services from community-based organizations for students and their families.

Community organizations work in partnership with the school district to provide each student and family with what they need.
